This year’s Baroque By Candlelight program continues the LCO’s rich heritage of baroque music performance, but in some new and vibrant ways. Soloists from the orchestra are featured in Vivaldi’s well known Concerto in D Minor, the eleventh work in his famous opus 3 collection “L’estro Armonico”. This is a piece of great drama and intensity, and has been the subject of numerous transcriptions due to its tunefulness, pathos, and musical contrasts. Bach himself was a great admirer of Vivaldi’s music, and made a brilliant organ transcription of this work for his own use! Nationally known countertenor Jay Carter joins the orchestra in a performance of Bach’s cantata “Widerstehe doch der Suende”, a gripping work for solo voice and strings. Mr. Carter serves as Artist In Residence at William Jewell College, and will also be singing a selection of opera arias by Handel, thus continuing the LCO’s tradition of featuring music by this great cosmopolitan master at every Baroque By Candlelight concert. We are especially pleased this year to welcome the select String Chamber Ensemble of Lawrence High School under the direction of LHS Orchestra director Rachel Dirks, who has chosen Bach’s engaging Brandenburg Concerto No.3 in G Major. Finally, the LCO will premier a new work by KU composer Erin Tomkins, specially written for the LCO to play at this year’s Baroque By Candlelight concert; a modern composer’s look at 18th-century music! Ms. Tomkins is a student of KU Professor Dr. Forrest Pierce, and we are thrilled to present her work to our LCO audience.
